We know you’re probably going to see us as biased, but we really do believe that the Netherlands is one of the most interesting countries in the world. If you’re already interested in our Dutch job alerts, it’s highly likely that you’re aware of this already, but we see no harm in relaying some interesting facts regardless.
The Dutch have several records to their name. Firstly, their national anthem – The Wilhelmus – is the oldest in the world, with both the music and words dating back to the 16th century. Another celebratory first is that the Dutch were the first people in the world to legalise gay marriage – an astounding feat, we’re sure you’ll agree.
It’s also been found that the Dutch are the tallest people in the world. Dutch men stand at an average of six feet, while the country's women clock in at approximately five foot five. Why, you ask? Researchers say it’s partially down to Dutch DNA, but it may also be down to environmental factors such as universal healthcare and nutrition, low social inequality and a heavy consumption of dairy products.
World-changing inventions and discoveries
We’ve touched upon this in a previous blog post, but the Dutch are responsible for some of the most vital inventions and discoveries of our time. The first compound microscope was built in the Netherlands in 1590, and further down the line, various nasty microbes such as bacteria and viruses were discovered. Who knows – without the Dutch, many of us might not have been around, or at least as healthy, as we are today.
The Dutch are also responsible for the inventions of CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray, gin and coffee and – oddly enough – orange carrots.
